# Opening files

`Enter` or a double-click opens the selected file with Windows, and opens a folder in the list.

`F3` views the selected file:

- A text file opens read-only in the built-in editor. That includes source files, `.txt`, `.md`, `.json`, and names such as `Makefile` and `README`.
- An image the program can decode, such as PNG or JPEG, opens in the image viewer.
- Anything else is left to Windows.

`F4` edits a text file in the built-in editor. It refuses a file that is not text.

Both commands need a single selected file. They do nothing in the clipboard history.
